Google Photos is updated with support for Wide-Color Gamut, what is that for?

This time the hardware has been faster than the software. High-end smartphones are already capable of taking pictures with a wider color gamut than sRGB, the color space used by all Android devices. Most, in fact, can display a color space on their screens 25% higher than sRGB. And the Mountain View company, with Google Photos 4.21, which is the last update, you have solved the problem.

With Google Photos 4.21, the Mountain View company has introduced support for Wide Color Gamut. This means that, for example, images and photos can be displayed in the P3 color space, 25% wider than sRGB. In this way, users will be able to enjoy many more nuances in colors on their screens. And in the image that Google itself has offered, making a comparison between versions 4.20 and 4.21 of Google Photos, we can see that the difference is really big. There are more shades of red in the image than can be seen in Google Photos 4.20 with sRGB. And in 4.21, the image looks perfect.

Why with Google Photos 4.21 your photos will have more color than ever

Until now the photographs and images have been showing in sRGB as a color space, and from now on they will be seen in P3. So there will no longer be aberrations as a result of the color space conversion, and we will also be able to display 25% more colors due to the difference between one technology and another. However, keep in mind that some manufacturers had already implemented this change in their own gallery application, so some users were already viewing their photos properly.

The key is that the Mountain View company is the first to have updated a large-scale application. In other words, the arrival of the P3 color space support to Google Photos is something that is going to affect a really significant number of users. And from now on, the critical step is for other developers to adapt their corresponding applications to also offer support for this color space.

Both cameras and smartphone screens -from a certain price range- are already adapted. Therefore, users already had the necessary hardware available for this additional 25% color. The software has arrived later, but little by little the support is being implemented, and Google Photos is the first major update. But not all is good news, because for some users the photos look bad in Google Photos 4.21.
