Free WiFi reaches Renfe AVE trains

Free WiFi AVE

El Free WIFI finally lands in Renfe AVE trains. After a long time waiting for it, and different rumors and statements that made it clear, now this new WiFi service has finally been officially presented for users traveling on Renfe high-speed trains. They will be able to access the Internet through WiFi thanks to the new service playrenfe.

Free WiFi in AVE

The train has become a very useful means of travel because it gives us the option of being able to work while we travel. However, the truth is that nowadays working in mobility also implies the need to have an Internet connection. Until now, the only option was a mobile connection. And when we are traveling at almost 300 km / h having a stable and constant connection is not easy, and even less when we are in a tunnel. Well, now that is going to end, because we will no longer need to depend on our mobile Internet connection when traveling on Renfe AVE trains, as the company has included an Internet service through WiFi in its high-speed lines. Or well, rather he has a project to bring it to all high-speed trains over the next year.

The service will start operating this November in a Beta version, and will be implemented as of December 5 as standard on the AVE Madrid - Seville line. It is expected that next year hit all the high speed trains.

Connecting to the Internet from the AVE

Users who have a + Renfe card or a + Renfe Plata card, the first being able to get free, they will have access to the connection via WiFi. Customers who have a + Renfe Oro or + Renfe Premium card, as well as Preferential class travelers, will have access to the Premium connection. Of course, you will have to have at least that free + Renfe card, otherwise you will have to pay on the train. That means that if you want free WiFi you will have to request your card first.

With these connections you can see the content offered on the train, such as movies, newspapers, television, etc. If we want to use our own applications, such as Netflix, YouTube or WhatsApp, we will have a problem, because the free connection will be limited to 20 MB of data, while the Premium will not exceed 100 MB. That is, we can send messages, the odd photo, some work document, and little else.

How is it possible to have Internet on the AVE? You have to think that if it is difficult to have Internet on your mobile when we travel on the AVE, it is also complex to have an installation on the train with which to connect to the Internet. Its structure is made up of a 4G connection combined with a satellite connection, which they then deploy by through a WiFi network to all users.

For the passage through tunnels, a buffering technology that in theory should offer us the possibility of remaining connected to the Internet and keep talking on the phone without losing connection. This is the theory, although in practice we will see if it is possible. Be that as it may, being able to have free WiFi on the AVE lines is good news. By the end of next year it should be integrated into all Renfe high-speed lines and it will certainly be an incentive to buy a ticket on one of these lines, to the detriment of the standard lines.
