Improvements and changes in DTT starting in February

Goodbye to SD quality

The quality of television broadcasts in Spain is about to improve. This is thanks to Spanish television networks must release the line that will now use 5G mobile technology. I'll tell you all about this change in DTT.

Why is this change made?

National Technical Plan for Digital Television

This change is within the legal framework that has been proposed by the government of Spain with the National Technical Plan for Digital Television. This change was planned for January 2023 but there have been difficulties during the negotiation process with the regional television channel providers.

Despite everything, this change in DTT is going to occur soon and It is done mainly for two reasons.

Release the 5G band (694-790 MHz frequencies)

The first is release the 700 MHz band for new electronic communications services: The 700 MHz band is ideal for the development of the 5G technology, which offers higher speed and data transmission capacity.

Offer images in high definition (HD)

Secondly, it is intended improve current service digital television with all channels of DTT in HD quality guaranteeing DTT coverage throughout the national territory.

Goodbye to low quality. Although we have been managing this change for many years, we are finally seeing its end. It will be this February, keep reading to find out when.

When the DTT change occurs

high definition images

This change is already taking place, with RTVE being one of the first to face this challenge. All RTVE channels such as La 1, La 2, Teledeporte, Canal 24 Horas and Clan now only broadcast in high definition. They do not even have the possibility of performing "SimulCast" (the broadcast of content in two qualities SD and HD).

This will be carried out change progressively until February 14 this year where all the channels must have moved to the new and dedicated band. Hence you will have all the channels in HD on your TV.

But if you don't have these channels on your Smart TV or television, don't worry. Simply you need to configure the channels (again) to be able to see them with this quality.

You have to retune the channels again

Retune HD channels

It is a simple process on both normal televisions and Smart TVs. Retuning your TV channels depends on the brand and model, I'm going to tell you how to do this in general on any Smart TV.

The first thing you should do is find TV options or settings. Within "settings" you must look for a option that says “Channels” or “Channel Settings”.

Within the channel menu you should see an option to tune into the television channels. And unless your television is very old, you will usually find the possibility of automatically organizing the channels within the "Channels" menu.

If you have any problems during this process, I recommend visiting the official website for queries and incidents with DTT.
