PlantNet, an app with which to identify plants with the camera of your mobile

PlantNet

We call them smartphones, smart phones, if we translate it into Spanish, and the truth is that sometimes they can be truly intelligent. At least, sometimes they are capable of becoming really useful tools, as it is in the case of this application, PlantNet. And it is that it is an app with which we can identify plants using the camera of our mobile.

PlantNet

The world of botany sometimes presents us with too many difficulties to become fond of it if we do not have enough time. However, we are surrounded by plants. Even if we live in a very central area of the city, it is not difficult to find a place where we have a large number of different plant species that we do not even know about. PlantNet wants to help us know a little more about the plants around us. In principle, the idea of the application is simple. It is about using the entire database of plant images that you have so that when capturing a photograph of a plant we can know what plant it is.

PlantNet

Of course, the application has its limitations and it will be necessary to learn to use it precisely so that it is able to identify the plants we are photographing. For example, we are reminded that it is easier to identify a plant if we only capture a photograph of one of the leaves of that plant with a uniform background instead of trying to capture a photograph in which several different plants appear in the capture, no matter how much centered that the plant appears.

Obviously, it is an app for botanical users, and even the names that we find are the scientific names of each of the plants, but if the app is capable of recognizing the plant, it will be able to give us various data about it, such as whether it is an edible plant. PlantNet is a free app that is available on Google Play, and in which we can also contribute to provide more images and more data about plants.
