Project Fi is now official, a revolution for operators

Project Fi Cover

For some time we have been talking about the possibility of Google launching a mobile operator, and the day of the presentation of this platform is today, Project Fi is now official. And we are not talking about just any launch, but about a complete revolution for operators and mobile communications. We tell you what Project Fi consists of in depth.

Unmatched connectivity

Project Fi arrives to completely change the world of telecommunications. What is Project Fi? It is the Nexus program, but for the operators. Just as Nexus aims to collaborate with different manufacturers to offer what Google believes is the best experience in the mobile world, Project Fi will collaborate with operators to create the best mobile experience, starting with offering connectivity unbeatable and incomparable. What are we talking about?

Two of the largest mobile operators in the United States already collaborate with Google to be part of Project Fi: Sprint and T-Mobile. You already know that sometimes we have coverage in areas that other operators do not have, and vice versa. But in addition to the coverage of the operators, we also have the coverage that open Wi-Fi networks give us, which is sometimes much more stable. Imagine that there was a platform that united all these sources of mobile coverage, that we passed it through a filter that would be responsible for choosing the best one, and that we received it in the form of a single network called Project Fi. Well that is exactly what Google has launched. The platform will be able to switch from one network to another, be it Wi-Fi, T-Mobile or Sprint without having to end a conversation. In this way we will have a greater coverage area, and being able to take advantage of the most stable connections at all times. Open Wi-Fi connections will not be a problem, since Google will act as an encryption, so that for all practical purposes, it will be like its own and individual network. For that it had to be Google VPN or the Surfshark VPN service, which we talked about a few weeks ago.

On all devices

Another novelty of Project Fi has to do with the fact that the phone number will be in the Cloud. That means that we do not necessarily need a SIM card, and that our number is not associated with a single device, but with our own account, so that by logging into said account, we can talk, send messages, or connect to the Internet using it. "Mobile account" using the smartphone, a tablet, or even the smartphone of a relative, and it does not matter if the tablet does not have a mobile network but only Wi-Fi, we can also use it as a mobile connection. Something that has been pursued for a long time, and that only Google could achieve through Project Fi in this way. And, if the above was possible, this was already extremely easy.

Pay what you use

But how much does it cost? $ 20 a month is what it will cost us to have access to the network with all the basic functions of a mobile phone, such as calls, messages and everything else typical of a mobile rate: the possibility of using Wi-Fi tethering, international coverage in more than 120 countries ... From there we will have to pay for data traffic. 1GB will cost $ 10 per month. 2GB will cost $ 20 per month. 3 GB will cost $ 30 a month. And so on. The best thing is that the data that we do not use will not be charged to us. Suppose that we have contracted 3 GB for 30 euros per month, and that we only use 1,4 GB that month, they give us 16 dollars back at the end of the month, because it is what we have not used, so we can contract what we think we are going to use without fear that we will fall short later. They are rates for users who want to hire a good service. Own to users of operators such as Vodafone, Movistar or Orange, but which will continue to be strange for those who seek virtual companies to lower the price to a minimum. In any case, it is a really interesting service that we hope will soon arrive in Spain, since at the moment it will only be available in the United States, for the Nexus 6, and by invitation, which can be requested at fi.google.com.
