Sony explains the change in the submersibility policy of its terminals

Sony Xperia ZR Water

Not long ago it was known that the Sony company politics changed of use of terminals that are compatible with the IP68 standard, such as those belonging to the range Xperia Z. The fact is that to date we were not very clear about the reasons why this decision was made, something that has changed because they have told us what has led them to make this decision.

The fact is that it has been recommended not to use the devices that offer the aforementioned compatibility regularly underwater, something that was not the case before. In this way, and publishing the new recommendations in your own website, now it is not recommended, for example, to take photos with the device submerged. Now, as we have been told, what is sought is to maintain the established parameters of the IP (Ingress Protection) standard so that the guarantee is fully valid and the quality standards offered are maintained.

Sony's reply

Here is the full text that Sony has sent us in which they indicate the reasons that have led to change the submersibility policy offered in the devices that to date have been put on the market with compatibility with the standard IP68 (which allows nothing to happen to the phone or tablet in question for a period of 30 minutes at a depth of 1,5 meters):

“Sony is committed to always offering the highest quality standards in all its products and customer service. The resistance to water and dust of Xperia devices has been independently tested and validated following the standards of IP (Ingress Protection) certification, approved and used throughout the mobile telephony sector. We have complete confidence in the quality of our products, which are created to meet the standards for which they have been designed.

Recent changes to our policy stem from our sincere interest in providing users with more accurate information on how to protect their devices in daily use. We have highlighted the necessary precautions that they must take according to the established IP parameters, so that this use is in line with the guarantee we offer on our products.

We have gone one step further by aligning our marketing campaigns with this new policy so that the proper use of our devices remains latent. The terms of the guarantee included in them remain as they are until now and we will analyze all the cases that come to us through the technical service according to these terms ”.

Does the change seem logical to you?

The truth is that once you read the reasons that led to the change, they make some sense and are not far-fetched. But, it is not less true, that more than one user once bought a Sony model to be able to use it underwater. As I said at the time, I personally have used more than one Xperia Z submerged and I have taken photos with it without suffering any mishap ... from what has been detected it must be something specific that obviously affects the devices, at least I think. Of course, the terms of the guarantee are maintained (and we already explained how they check in sony if this is effective).
