The ambient light sensor of the Moto 360 is deactivated at the factory

El Motorola Moto 360 has finally been officially unveiled, which means that we already know all the features of the new smartwatch. Although it stands out for its design, it has a section of the circle in which there is no screen, because it has an ambient light sensor. The most curious thing is that this sensor is deactivated at the factory. Why?

Two days ago we talk about one of the strangest features that we perceive as soon as we take the Motorola Moto 360. It is the bottom section of the screen, or rather the full circle of the clock, where there is no screen, it is as if the screen has been cut. And we said that it was all due to the company having to integrate an ambient light sensor into the smartwatch that was responsible for measuring the level of light in the environment of said watch. It is one of the few watches that has such a sensor, so it could be said that it is a differentiating characteristic, although, is it enough to cut off a part of the screen?

Motorola may have thought so at first, but then we do not understand in any case that said ambient light sensor is deactivated from the factory, although this is also due to something important. Apparently, the fact that the ambient light sensor arrives deactivated is due to the battery that it uses. It is not that the ambient light sensor itself drains battery, but rather the fact that using this sensor to level the illumination of the screen is what makes it spend more. The same happens in smartphones, which leads us to affirm that more battery is saved without the automatic lighting level than with it.

What happens is that without this active sensor, the smartwatch screen turns off after a few seconds, while with it active, the screen lasts longer in standby, which uses more battery. Of course, if you remove a section of the screen to add an ambient light sensor, but then deactivate it because it uses more battery, we find a major problem, especially when most would have preferred to do without that sensor to have a full screen and a battery with greater autonomy. In the end we find the typical problem that always exists with products that are not yet completely finished, and that is that there are important shortcomings that are not solved until a while has passed, or until a company hits the key.
