Temporary substitutes
A quick search on Twitter shows us that WhatsApp dropped on Android is a big problem for many. It is the most used chat application and the main one to keep us communicated.

If you feel like getting a little more experimental, you can try the two most recent additions: Google Allo for text and Google Duo for video chat. Finally, Skype or Whatsapp Microsoft is still present.
UPDATE: After 10:30 AM on November 3, WhatsApp seems to have returned to normal for most users.
