Five sections where Android Lollipop is still worse than KitKat

Image with illuminated Android logo

The arrival of Android Lollipop It has been very positive for the development of Google's operating system, but there are some sections where it is evident that the latest iteration of the Mountain View work needs to be debugged. We say this since there are some sections where KitKat is still superior to the new version of Android.

It is usually the norm that when a new operating system is launched, there are details that must be improved so that its operation exceeds the previous one (and, therefore, that it is as expected). Android Lollipop has not gotten rid of this, which is a clear example that the times of careful testing by developers have been forgotten and now the speed is the priority for launching something new so that its operation is adequate.

Android Lollipop 5.0

We are going to indicate five sections in what for the moment Android KitKat shows superior behavior to Lollipop, not to mention security and stability holes that are common in developments that include novelties that, as in this case, are very important in the structural field, such as Material Design or the ART virtual machine.

The sections where Android Lollipop suffers

The ones we comment on are mentioned because the use of the operating system itself, or by the comments of a good number of users, are those that we believe are clear when it comes to losing out against Android KitKat (yes, the truth is that in general, Lollipop is a much more refined and complete operating system ):

Autonomy

Well, the truth is that with the announcement of Project Volta the hopes for a better management of the battery charge were high, but for the moment the results are disappointing. A clear example that we have "suffered" is that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has a continuous use time up to 15% lower when using Android Lollipop (with the LG G3 the same thing happens). Here we simply have to say that Google has to put the "batteries", since we are talking about an essential section.

Silent mode

With the arrival of the updates the absence of this has been solved, even companies like Samsung have launched their own "patches". The thing is, the disappearance in version 5.0 is something that has no explanation and there are many users who suffer from this terrible error. There are even applications they fix this on the Play Store. Google has already rectified, but the truth is that it is necessary to have one of the latest iterations of Android Lollipop. Another big mistake.

Silent mode of the LG G3

Widgets on the lock screen

I'm not very fond of these types of applications, but the truth is that their compatibility and execution on Android Lollipop is not exactly the best possible. The reason for this seems to be the arrival of notifications on this screen, which has limited the proper functioning that KitKat does exist. Another section to be corrected by the Mountain View company, although we very much fear that it will be the independent developers who will have to adapt to Material Design.

Application compatibility

This is an endemic problem with updates, but the truth is that there are some applications that run from erratic way with Android Lollipop… more than when KitKat arrived at the time. The fact is that all developments work correctly with this latest version, so at this time it is ahead. Here there is no other: the companies that develop must wake up.

Android cheats

Multitasking

Finally we come to this section which is a headache for more than one. Multitasking environments are essential on mobile devices, and Android Lollipop is no exception. The reason for his poorly refined behavior is that RAM management is not exactly good And, this, with KitKat in its last versions did not happen. It seems that with Android 5.1.1 There is improvement in this section, but this version can be used, at the moment, by very few terminals (counted on the fingers of one hand).

This article seems quite sensational and lacking in weighty arguments, even if it is a bit long I will try to present my point of view (with arguments):

    1. Autonomy -> in my personal experience my Moto G 2013 lasts the same with Kitkat and with Lollipop, both with stock rom and with cooked rom. Perhaps your results are due to a poor implementation of the firmware on those specific models.

    2. Silent mode -> True, it has changed. How to silence the mobile?
    On Kitkat: ↓ volume - ↓ volume - ↓ volume - vibration - mute
    On Lollipop: volume - nothing
In addition, you can now set an automatic silence time and silence specific functions while keeping others (priority mode).

    3. Widgets on the lock screen -> although it is true that with the default launcher you cannot put them simply by changing the launcher, which was already done by almost everyone who needed such a level of customization.

    4. Application compatibility -> if, as you say, this happens in all versions, it cannot be used as an argument to point a bit to Kitkat.
In my experience with Lollipop, most apps have worked perfectly and those that did not have been updated by their creator in a few days.

    5. Multitasking -> Multitasking is a pending issue in Android, but in any case it is better in Lollipop than in Kitkat, to name a few details: the presentation in "Carroussel" mode, persistence before reboots, new screen fix mode ...

Very interesting comment, and glad you left it. Of course, as it happens to you, I do not share your opinion. I proceed to list how you have done:

1- Autonomy. My experience is stronger with the Note3 (which is my usual use model), but I have done the same with Moto E first generation, Galaxy S5 and in all cases the reduction of autonomy both in continuous playback with screen on and in use. normal has decreased the 15% mentioned. If your experience is different I am very happy, but comments from other colleagues with models like NOte 4 are the same: autonomy is less. Therefore, I think that Lollipop and the nefarious Project Vota do not work. And no, everything is well implemented since they are original ROMs, since the cooked ones have modifications from developers that usually improve (and in some cases the opposite) some sections.

2- The silent mode has not changed. It has been removed at first. It has been replaced by Interruptions (of which I do not speak since it is something else that, in addition, is much more complicated to manage, especially for those who do not have great knowledge). These can be useful in certain cases, and in others not so much ... especially at night. I do not think it would have cost so much to keep the Silent Modes as it was, accessible in the Notification Bar (and the fact is that I must have some reason, since several companies have made it return to this). I keep it, it's a fail.

3- Launcher: it is true that if you install a new one this may change, but I don't think everyone does this, far from it. The case is that the "normal" usage options are reduced, which does not make sense since simply changing the launcher, as you say, this is possible. Again, it cost nothing to keep the widgets option on the lock screen. Another fail, I think.

4- You talk about your experience regarding application compatibility, mine is the opposite. I have found more than ten that the interface appears absolutely misplaced, and this is supposed to come after the experience of four main versions of Android. Something less I expected from the work of Google. If you do not learn from previous versions, we are going wrong, and keeping something the same is not positive. Of course, the developers have the key to almost everything, but not everything ... since if it is possible to implement Lollipop even development without excessive problems in the interface, is there much reason not to be the other way around?

5- It is true that Android is not good at multitasking, but the RAM that Lollipop leaves free is not exactly better than in KitKat, far from it. There is the key to everything. And Google has recognized the phallus and is working on fixing it. I have not mentioned, by the way, that 5.0 or higher does not offer better visual options, which includes them, but the work with several open developments is clearly inferior (let's hope that 5.1.1 as said fixes this definitively, that we have there for something. to ART).

Greetings and I hope we continue this conversation.

And where are the 5 teams?
Mediocre article where there are no comparisons, no major references.

Hello, what five teams are you missing?

Lollipop has gone very badly for me, sometimes my mobile heats up and it seems like it's going to explode, the camera freezes, the contacts are a disaster, I don't like the look, well, I'm very disappointed with Lollipop.
