Phablets comparison: Nokia Lumia 1520 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Market trends are a variant against which different manufacturers of mobile devices may present little resistance - for their own good -. In this way and given the good results and acceptance received by the results of the terminals launched by competing brands, some others such as HTC have been forced to enter the phablet sector with the HTC One Max and, more recently, Nokia with the Lumia 1520 which has just been presented in Abu Dhabi. In this article we confront the new device of the Finnish firm with the 'enemy' to beat in the sector, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

El Nokia Lumia 1520 presented this Tuesday at the event that the firm recently acquired by Microsoft, becomes the new flagship of the house and for this it has among its arsenal with Windows Phone 8 and the clear intention of stand up to Android, once and for all, with a device capable of competing with the main exponents of the mobile operating system of Google. For that, Nokia seems to have made an interesting bet in the hardware section. It will be enough?Phablets comparison: Nokia Lumia 1520 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 3

What jumps out: Operating system and general appearance

The first difference between the two contenders that we present to you today and that, surely, are going to fight for the throne of the 'phablet kingdom' is the operating system. While the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, Nokia Lumia 1520 has been presented in partnership with the latest update of Windows Phone 8, which opens the doors to a series of new features so far banned from devices with the mobile operating system of Microsoft - Some characteristics that we will be reeling from now on -.

In this sense, we will begin by focusing on the six-inch screen with which the Nokia Lumia 1520 has been brought to light and that narrowly exceeds the 5,7 third-generation Samsung phablet. In the resolution section, the Finnish device is Full HD 1.920 by 1.080 pixels, which equates in this aspect to the Galaxy Note 3 in a tonic that will be repeated in the different sections: unlike in other releases, Nokia seeks to abandon the feeling that its terminals have always been one step behind Android since its launch.

Regarding the overall dimensions, while the Lumia 1520 presents about 162,8 by 85,4 and 8, millimeters for a total weight of 209 grams, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 yields data of 151,2 by 79,2 by 8,3 millimeters and a weight of 188 grams.

Processor

Following the idea that we have just raised, the Lumia 1520 once again equates to the rest of the phablet market competitors by equipping the powerful processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, which we can already see working at full capacity in the own Samsung Galaxy Note 3 or Sony Xperia Z Ultra.

In this sense, the company based in Espoo has opted for the powerful chipset of the American company, understanding it as a guarantee to get the best possible performance from the hardware and operating system of the terminal. In this way, the task of moving the pixels across the six inches of your screen will be in the hands of the Adreno GPU 330 which also has the Galaxy Note 3. While, at the same time, the Qualcomm facilitates the integration of LTE support.

Camera, internal storage and other specifications

The main and most striking difference that we find when putting both phablets face to face - beyond the operating system, of course - is the camera. While that of Nokia Lumia 1520 has 20 megapixels with technology PureView, Carl lenses Zeiss and optical image stabilizer - OIS by its name in English -, that of the phablet of Samsung stays in the 13 megapixels and, in what was possibly one of the biggest disappointments of his presentation, without OIS despite the fact that other devices in the sector already had the aforementioned system.

Focusing now on the internal storage section, both devices offer 32 and 64 gig versions expandable by cards MicroSD. On the other hand and while the Nokia Lumia 1520 will be released with 2 gigs of RAM, one of the main novelties of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 they were his three gigabytes of RAM, which placed it at the head of the market in this section.

It is also worth noting the Nokia Lumia 1520 using the microphones - four in total, with two in the front and as many in the back -, which is firmly intended to be a step forward for the function Rich Recording optimizing services such as noise suppression, among others.

Availability and prices

While the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is already available in the Spanish market with official launch price of 749 euros - free, of course -, Nokia has announced that the Lumia 1520 it will begin to be distributed in the fourth quarter of the year in some markets such as the United States, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Finland; with a Estimated price without tax of $ 749 - around 548 euros to change -.

The phablet of Nokia It will arrive in stores in four color options - yellow, white, black and bright red - and will soon be distributed to other international markets beyond those described above, with which we hope that it will arrive in Spain in a short or medium term of time. .Phablets comparison: Nokia Lumia 1520 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Conclusions

Leaving aside any qualms that we may have when facing a device with Windows Phone 8 - why deny it, the experiences that a server has had to date have not been entirely satisfactory - we will wait until we can get hold of the new one Nokia Lumia 1520 to give a definitive opinion on the matter. On paper, the phablet of the Finnish company looks very good and, perhaps, its price makes it a quite interesting option compared to a Galaxy Note 3 to which its excessive cost and being weighed down by some details such as the lack of OIS on camera could end up billing Samsung. For your part Which one would you choose?

Without any doubt Nokia, I value much more the improvement of the camera compared to a RAM of one Gb less, also windows is not as demanding as android

    1.    jenni said

Yes, but windows does not do the same things that android does and the samsung note 😉 will be more fluid and suck less resources but it is a boring system and it is not a big deal… then there are hardly any apps….

      1.    Christian Bellamy said

Bored in what way? Because android only has colors and customization, but why do you want it if it looks elegant on a windows phone. In addition, hardly people know how to use a good device, they only want it for social networks, which is incorporated in WP8. The applications is not a problem, tell me which ones are you missing in a WP8? android has 900 thousand and wp has just 200 thousand, but are you going to use them all? I assure you that the ones you use the most on android are found in a WP8

Boring, that's what happens when people like you have never used Windows Phone, it is barely 2 and a half years old, and the app problems are solved faster and faster.

And the stylus, multitasking, 4G ...?
Are you really going to start taking photos with this billet for life?
What if when WP9 arrives, they say that the good, the true union of the entire MS ecosystem, will be out of update and also obsolete?

Fantastic, congratulations on your choice, to give your opinion it is not necessary to quote me, each one chooses the one that seems more appropriate to me I like the Nokia more than the Asian one, design, windows format, fluidity, simplicity etc…. I do not want to say that he is right but for color tastes and in terms of applications 75% of them are dead, leave that fallacy as much I need 50 and I have more than enough.

what you say is true for so many apps if they use 30 and it is a lot, I prefer the nokia and they have taken the step that most of a better processor more ram memory expected …….

I have the galaxy note 3 and the truth ... I think there is nothing like it .... It goes very very fast, it does not get caught and the number of innovations it has compared to HTC apple, which is becoming very outdated, are innumerable. Not only with the air gesture, which is incredible, but also the possibility of being able to do various things at the same time on this piece of screen is very useful. The truth is that I do not change my Samsung for anything and the other companies have to improve a lot so that I just consider that my terminal is not Samsung
By the way, the battery lasts two full days at medium performance and a day and a half at full performance (without leaving it at the moment) and it charges very very very fast

the Nokia is undoubtedly much better, the camera, image stabilization better design, faster, that is, it is better, the Samsung is still the same slop as always with absurd things, and does not innovate. In nothing.nokia much better

    1.    germanvirtual said

Although you prefer the Nokia Samsung, take better advantage of the screen and the size with its software that is not the same garbage as in the s4 is somewhat superior for its multitasking and other functions of the stylus, however it is necessary to compare them again when Windows phone 8.1 comes out.

my note 2 ended up against the wall with that I say it all, also the Nokia has more battery apart from better camera.

  8.   Aries said

the nokia is better, only with the quality of wp8 part in 2 to the samsung that and more now with 4 core

    1.    SmartSys said

Did you try any of the 2 or the 2 at the same time? I do, I have a store where I sell high-gamma smartphones and I was able to buy them, I am not a fan of Android (personally I use an iPhone) but the Note 3 not only surpasses it in possibilities, features, quality and applications (too many games that are in IOs and in Android they are NOT in WP) I brought 3 Nokia Lumia devices and 9 note 3, I have only one Note and 2 Lumia, for the next batch I am very clear about the choice of the people, I must give credit to Samsung and Android in this segment, and by far!

      1.    germanvirtual said

I think they are different segments, social networks, photos and wp fluency, Google games environment and Android tools, thank God there are both

I think Microsoft / Nokia continue with their very bad marketing strategies, what was it cost for them to add more RAM to the Lumia 1520 to compete head-to-head with the Note 3? or already minimal, to market it at par?

I know, Windows 8, being such a minimal and elegant OS, does not demand the absurd amount of RAM that Android and / or IOS7 do, but at least like that, they would shut up the thousands of Android and Apple fans who swear that the iPhone , Note, One or Galaxy are better and they judge the miserable WP they have had access to [and they think that WP is only Lumia 610/620/710/820 or at best 920], things would be different if nowadays a common user might compare their Note 3 to the Lumia 1520, but how to blame them for the derogatory comments towards WP? if at least in Mexico, you can already find the Note 3 or the iPhone 5s in any Telcel center [operator in my country] and Windows is just advertising the Lumia 925… -_- it always goes one step back! And when it arrives , it no longer has an impact because the entire potential market [that seeks the most "new and powerful" and is easily manipulated] has already acquired what came first, and they are condemned to have tariff plans with forced terms [the typical #WannaBe who wants the iPhone 5s and still paying for the IPhone 4]… xD

Anyway, if the batteries were put in, they would really shake any competition, no matter how giant ... look at the case of BlackBerry or Apple itself, which I think today can only boast of what it once was, with its pioneering products in the market. 😛

With The Nokia, Definitive, Strong and Durable Phones, Made of Very Good Quality, From Experience I Say So. WP8 Will Keep Growing, That's For Sure ..

  15.   Caesar Beard said

Well, for the nokia, because I don't care if the note 3 has 3gb of ram, and why put so much ram in WP if you are not going to use it 100%? I mean windows with 2 gigabytes of ram you have plenty of, and why assign more gigabytes to it if you don't even use full 2gb? Android is an OS that consumes more requirements than WP, that's why the note 3 has those 3 gb that it barely reaches.
My opinion is only that I like the 1520 more, Nokia is getting the batteries to first reach the Samsung and try to reverse them at least in something.
