Fortnite Battle Royale is one of the most successful video games in the world. In April 2020, Epic Games put Battle Royale on the official Google store. But it only lasted a few months, since in September, by breaking the rules of both Apple's App Store and Google Play, by using a payment system external to both platforms, it was expelled - not without great stir among users and the creation of the hashtag #FreeFortnite to support Epic's game on social media -.
Specifically, what Epic has added to the game is a system that is available for both the PC and iOS and Android versions: its new Epic Direct Payment system. In it you can buy, for example, 1000 turkeys, to later spend on things like skins, dances and all the paraphernalia that are in the game, which cost 9,99 euros. The key to Apple and Google's anger is that if we use this alternative, both with a credit card and with a PayPal account, it gives us a discount and those same 1000 V-Bucks cost 7,99 euros. Thus, it is clear that the "police are not stupid" and both those in Cupertino and Mountain View have seen Epic tout a payment system that they did not see a penny of.
The real controversy is behind the fees that Apple and Google charge developers, which are 20% of what users cost or spend on their games. Epic does not agree with this policy and has wanted to force the hand of the two giants who maintain the pulse, with no signs, for the moment, of solving it.
The good thing is that Epic kept at all times the possibility of downloading their game outside of Google Play, with all the updates and support from the company.
Why wasn't Epic's game on the Android store? The answer is simple: in-game purchases. In 2019, Google removed all apps from its store that had their own internal payment system, which did not go through the one controlled by the Mountain View giant. Something to which Epic refused and the system that we knew until now was mounted to be able to install the game on (almost) any mobile phone. Recovering an external payment system is what has ended up banning it from the Google Play Store.
