Qualcomm needs to react in the mid-range, will the Snapdragon 620 be the solution?

Qualcomm processor

If a couple of years ago someone thought that Qualcomm would have such tough competition in the market few of the processors would have believed him. But the truth is that the arrival of MediaTek and the push of companies like Samsung and Nvidia, with their Exynos and Tegra models (respectively), have made things very complicated for the great dominator of the SoC market for mobile devices.

In addition, failures such as the overheating of the Snapdragon 810 they have not helped at all for things to improve a lot, and only the need of many companies for high-end processors (for now there are not many that value other manufacturers on a regular basis, except for Samsung and its own components) makes the problems not greater.

Waiting for MediaTek to convince major assemblers to use their Helio X20, The truth is that the big problem for Qualcomm lies in the mid-range of the product, where the aforementioned manufacturer is "eating the toast" to the creator of the Snapdragon because the former are launching more and more complete models and very economic. This, obviously, creates a significant problem in a market segment that currently has a really significant level of sales. And this is where the Snapdragon 620.

Hope

This SoC has already begun to show signs of life and, from what it seems, the work that Qualcomm has done is very good. It has achieved an eight-core processor, we are talking about the Snapdragon 620, which is capable of offering performance close to 810 without overheating problems. Therefore, the company has detected the problem and is preparing to provide the corresponding solution, at least as far as hardware is concerned.

Qualcomm May Unveil New Adreno 400 GPU at CES 2014

But, the launch of the Snapdragon 620 must be accompanied by a reduction in the price of the processor for manufacturers, since otherwise MediaTek can continue to take the lead (especially when it comes to Chinese companies). This is something that has important implications, such as that the SoC that is launched as a replacement for the Snapdragon 410 is also very economical, since otherwise the model we are talking about would "engulf" his little brother. And, this is where I personally have doubts that Qualcomm has the necessary waist to do this, but it is forced to do so ... a very important dilemma.

Known samples of the Snapdragon 620

Here are a couple of screenshots of Geekbench in which you can see first the results obtained with the Snapdragon 620 and then with a Samsung SoC so that in this way you can assess the capacity that, on paper, the new processor will have that is not at all wrong.

Samsung processor results

The fact is that a very important moment is coming for Qualcomm, since on the one hand it must respond to the processors Samsung Exynos that have shown a very good performance in the high end and without temperature problems. And, on the other, the presence of MediaTek in the mid-range it is very wide and we will see if the Snapdragon 620 manages to regain lost ground in this segment. Personally I think that the former dominator of the market has it very complicated, but strange things have been seen. What do you think?

First Qualcomm if you need to react and offer a better processor for the mid-range 2015, however the Snapdragon 620 is not viable either for Qualcomm or for manufacturers to put it in mid-range products for two reasons: 1 the Soc 620 is a component that offers Too high performance and to be incorporated into devices with mid-range prices would cause great losses to Qualcomm for lowering the price of the chip and to manufacturers because their flagship products would not be so attractive to the consumer, since practically all the software that exists would work flawlessly with the 620 processor, and by common sense nobody is going to pay for a high-end smartphone 700 euros, existing a mid-range of 350 euros that behaves as a high-end, the Qualcomm 620 has to be destined for the high-end and the 8xx series as the next snapdragon 820 should be considered Premium range, however the Qualcomm 400 and 410 should no longer be considered by manufacturers as a range processormedium, in this range said processor has already completed its cycle, the Snapdragon 400 should already be intended for low-mid-range cell phones, that is, they cost between 125 and 150 euros because it is already inferior in performance to the mediatek 6735 that is in mobile phones of less of 200 euros.
2 the processor that Qualcomm must consolidate in the mid-range is not the 415 and 425 but a variant of the Snapdragon 610, that is, a 1.5 GHz core but not a53 cut architecture but uses the 15 cut architecture as the snapdragon 602a which was only made for smart cars and which is clearly superior to the 610 even though they have the same operating frequency.
A mid-range 2015 with snapdragon 400/410 no longer convinces users, the screen in this year for the mid-range can remain at 720p even until June 2016 but the processor must evolve, the cameras do not need to have more than 8 and 2 megapixels for the main and the front respectively but if the focal aperture and the lens should be better, the design in the mid-range should be better but the users do not demand a substantial improvement in this aspect, in what if the users are interested is that The mid-range 2015 have 16 gigs of internal memory and at least 1.5 gigs of RAM.
