The four things we expect from Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has landed in the world of androids, just over half a year after Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich did. This makes us think that before reaching the middle of 2013 we could already be seeing the next version, Android Key Lime Pie, which could be called 4.2 or 5.0. What things could Key Lime Pie bring? What do we expect from this new version of the operating system? What does Android need to take the next step?

In my opinion, Key Lime Pie will be the name that Android 5.0 version will receive, and I think it will be a very important generational leap. Jelly Bean arrived without too many additions. The right ones so that it could be considered a new version, and filing those small problems and deficiencies that Ice Cream Sandwich brought. Without a doubt, we are facing a fairly complete operating system at the moment, and there would not be much more to improve if everything continued like this. However, that will not happen, Apple will seek to differentiate itself with its iPhone 5, not only in hardware, but also in software. Android cannot be left behind. Therefore, we consider that these are the four things we expect from the future Key Lime Pie.

1.- Correct integration of Google services

Android right now has many new features in the United States that have not reached certain parts of Europe. There are Google Play services operating in Spain that are not in the United Kingdom, and there are some that are present in France and others that are not. Obviously, you can't survive like this. If you really want to function properly and keep people happy, you have to maintain consistency, at least when it comes to launch times, even if that means delaying some. Without a doubt, this is a lack of Android. It has to unify its services offered throughout the world, and follow the same line. It cannot be that the Nexus 7 is a very good device, with some great functions, and we cannot enjoy even half of it here.

2.- New interface and graphic appearance

Android copied, and yes, let's say it without fear, the user interface to iOS. The two are very similar, and the truth is that they have become outdated. Among other things, Apple does not offer a screen where we can put widgets, it only offers an application drawer. Android in addition to that app drawer has the main screen, a positive point. However, in this window, in addition to the widgets, we put applications that we use regularly. In the end, we have two places, the main screen and the application drawer, which have a lot in common, a loss of style, and a usability failure. You have to take a step forward. Windows has set the precedent. User interfaces have to change and move forward. I am convinced that Apple is going to do it with its iPhone 5, and Android has to respond with Key Lime Pie, which curiously, would be called Android 5.0, coincidental the numerical coincidence? We will see what they are doing.

3.- A real multitasking

Let's face it here too, multitasking on smartphones is one of the biggest lies in this world. At most, what we can see is a download in progress while we do something else, but we hardly have two applications running simultaneously. The systems capture the moment in which the application was left, the last state, and when we return, they try to recover it in that situation, something very different from being multitasking.

What about playing a game while having a video call? Or writing on WhatsApp while watching a video? Only Samsung has done something now with the new Pop Up Play of its Galaxy S3, but there is a lot of ground to cover in this field.

4.- Support of multimedia codecs

The truth is that, hiding behind all the applications out there, Android does not support a large number of multimedia codecs. This is a problem when what we are trying to reproduce is a heavy and resource-intensive file. If the codecs were installed as standard, and not in third-party applications, the performance of the device would be optimized and so many resources would not be consumed to play certain files.
